Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating Disorder Treatment Centers

Eating disorders stem from a psychiatric condition that thousands of people (primarily young women) struggle with every day. Affecting individuals' self image, physical symptoms from eating disorders can result in erratic behavioral patterns such as starvation, binging, purging, excessive exercise, and even drug addiction.

Since the direct result of these behaviors can be malnutrition, an individual can sometime lack the basic physical strength or stamina necessary to help combat the psychological complications that eating disorder treatment may involve.

The focus of whole-body healing at our New Seasons eating disorder treatment centers is designed to address your mind and body, helping you deal with both the psychological and physical tolls an eating disorder can have the state of your overall health.

To visit one of our eating disorder treatment centers and get on the road to recovery, please call our toll free number or email us today.

Types of Eating Disorders

Different types of eating disorders have different characteristics and, as such, require different methods of eating disorder treatment. Here are some of the more common types of eating disorders:

  • Anorexia: Scientifically known as Anorexia Nervosa, this eating disorder is characterized by an altered self-image, low body weight, a fear of weight gain, and behaviors that include starvation, vomiting, excessive exercise, and other measures designed to keep body weight down.

  • Bulimia: Scientifically known as Bulimia Nervosa, this eating disorder is also a psychological disorder that leads those who suffer from it to have recurrent binging periods, followed by measures used to reduce the effects of the binge, namely: vomiting, laxatives, diuretics, or other improper uses of medication.

  • Exercise Bulimia: As a subset of bulimia, those suffering from exercise bulimia engage in excessive exercise to combat the effects of binging. They exhibit obsessive behavior that leads to inadequate recovery time between workouts, which cause extreme duress on the body's physical capabilities.

  • Binge-Eating Disorders: People who suffer from this subset of bulimia engage in periods of extreme overeating at least twice a week. Unlike other forms of bulimia, however, those suffering from binge-eating disorders don't follow their binges with varying forms of purging or exercise, thus leading them to often become overweight or obese.

Now that we've looked at some different types of eating disorders, let's take a look at some of the ways our eating disorder treatment centers can help you get back to a healthy lifestyle - physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Eating Disorder Treatment from New Seasons

When you or someone you love comes to New Seasons for eating disorder treatment, we take a multifaceted approach to the multiple, complex issues that can lead to the debilitation stemming from eating disorders. Through education, therapy, and recreation, our eating disorder treatment centers can make a difference.

Eating Disorder Treatment: Education

The first step in any recovery program is learning what you are up against. Part of our eating disorder treatment plan is to work with clients and explain to them exactly what is happening in their bodies. As Sir Francis Bacon said, "Knowledge is power." By giving our clients the knowledge they need to address their disorder, we are giving them the initial power they need to beat it.

Eating Disorder Treatment: CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, also known as CBT, is a transitory step in eating disorder treatment as its educational and coaching nature has a ring of familiarity for most clients. By placing emphasis on the current moment and the changes that clients can bring about in the future, this type of eating disorder treatment combines elements of both cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy to help clients gain a better sense of how their disorders are affecting them and the behaviors that can either help or hurt their progress.

Eating Disorder Treatment: DBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy, also known as DBT, combines the aforementioned CBT with dialectical thinking and Zen. This approach places great focus on getting clients into a greater state of awareness of the present moment, whenever that present moment may be. By helping clients discovering their place in the interconnectedness of all things, they can act on their healing from a position of perspective and objectivity.

Eating Disorder Treatment: Nutrition

Of particular importance to those undergoing eating disorder treatment, proper nutrition is absolutely critical in helping clients reach a state of mental and physical well-being. As those who have been suffering from an eating disorder have been dealing with complications that directly affect their bodies' nutritional balance, our eating disorder treatment centers feature a capable food service team and a registered dietician who can help design a healthy and nutritious menu that can help give health back to a body that has undergone duress caused by an eating disorder.

Further, at our eating disorder treatment centers, our dietician will work with you to teach how to plan, shop for, and prepare healthy meals so that when you return to your daily life, you have the knowledge you need to facilitate healthy eating habits.

Eating Disorder Treatment: Recreation

Along with healthy eating habits, a safe exercise and recreation regiment can help you maintain a healthy body and reduce stress that can complicate recovery efforts. As part of your eating disorder treatment, you will have access to numerous recreational activities as well as the ability to discuss healthy exercise and recreation habits with our full-time Personal Trainer/Recreation Coordinator.

Eating Disorder Treatment: Family Education

No person faces recovery alone. Each of us has a support network of family members that wants us to be well. At New Seasons, we incorporate family education into our eating disorder treatment program. By including family members in the recovery effort, clients and their loved ones are better able to create a support network and, in some cases, correct the behaviors of certain family dynamics that may have been unintentionally contributing the stress that the person with the eating disorder has been facing.

Eating Disorder Treatment: Holistic Therapies

At New Seasons, we believe that every person who comes to us is unique and has specific needs that influence how they will accept eating disorder treatment. As such, every person deserves a unique menu of options to help find lasting wellness. Therefore, in addition to the more common practices associated with eating disorder treatment, we also offer a host of holistic therapy options that include, among other things: art/creative therapy, hypnotherapy, and acupuncture.
