Everyone gets "the blues" from time to time, but when sadness just won't go away, it could be depression.
- Have you noticed a change in your sleeping pattern such as
difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently throughout the night,
or oversleeping in the morning?
- Do you feel like you've lost interest in activities that were once enjoyable for you?
- Have you been feeling sad, blue, unhappy or down in the dumps?
- When the phone rings, do you tend to ignore it even when you know it may be a good friend calling?
- Does it feel like you've been drained of all energy and that
to do just about anything will take more effort than you can summon?
- Have you been feeling weepy and crying a lot?
- Does it seem as though everything is going wrong no matter how hard you’re trying?
- Have you been turning down invitations to get together with
friends because trying to socialize feels like it will take more energy
than you have or because you think your "down" mood will just depress
everyone else?
- Do you find yourself purposefully or absentmindedly engaging
in risky behavior such as crossing the street when the signal is red,
or not wearing your seat belt?
- Have you been staying home from work or school because of your depressed mood?
- Has it been taking longer and seeming harder than usual to make decisions?
- Do you feel inadequate, like a failure, and not very likable?
- Have you been getting headaches, stomachaches, backaches, or
pains in your joints or muscles that can’t be traced to a physical
illness or injury?
- Have you been thinking a lot about your own death?
- Have you gained weight or lost weight without really trying?
- Do you find it hard to concentrate for any real length of time?
- Have you been thinking about suicide?
- Have you been drinking more alcohol than you usually do?
- Does it seem like you've lost interest in sex or are you experiencing sexual difficulties?
- Have you been feeling restless and/or irritable?
- Does eating seem to be more trouble than it's worth?
