We all feel anxious at times: butterflies before an interview, tension
in traffic, panic in the face of danger. Too much anxiety too
often, however, can be a problem.
- Do you tend to worry about things, even when there are no signs of trouble?
- Does your body often feel so tense, you’re unable to relax?
- Do you avoid certain things or situations such as dogs,
traveling in airplanes, closed-in places, heights, escalators, and
highway driving because they make you feel afraid?
- Out of the blue, does your heart start rapidly pounding?
- Do your emotions and moods go up and down a lot in response to changes around you?
- Do you suddenly feel frightened and shake or tremble even when there are no signs of trouble?
- At times, do things seem unreal or do you feel detached from everything around you?
- Do you get aches or pains that can’t be traced to physical illness or injury?
- When other people look at you, do you break out in a sweat and shake uncontrollably?
- Do you stay home from work or school because you’re afraid of being called on in a meeting or in class?
- Do you have nightmares?
- Do you unexpectedly get hot flashes or cold chills for no apparent reason?
- Do you get nausea or have stomach problems that are not caused by illness or a medical condition?
- Do you worry that you might lose control or do something that will be very embarrassing?
- Do you feel afraid and have difficulty catching your breath?
- Do you have unexpected spells of increased sensitivity to sound, light, or touch?
- Do you have frequent and sudden attacks of diarrhea?
- Do you get tired easily?
- Do you have difficulty falling asleep?
- Do you sleep restlessly and/or wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep?
- Do you have unexpected waves of depression that occur with little or no real provocation?
